Mount Evans is one of 54 “fourteeners” — mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet — in the state of Colorado. What makes Mount Evans notable though is the fact that you can drive almost entirely to the top, making it the highest paved road in all of North America. Because the road is so high up, it’s only open for just over three months out of the year: generally between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
This year, the road was due to be closed the morning of September 6th. Jess and I wanted to head up there before they closed the road for the season. I took the afternoon of Friday, September 3rd off of work so we could make the trip. The trip to the top only took us about two hours from when we left our house, but that did include a few stops along the way.
The road up to the top was certainly breathtaking. There were no guardrails the entire way up, and the road went to the edge of the sheer drop-off in many areas.
